John Longbottom is a 22 year old journalist, photographer and graphic designer. Upon completing a BA Hons degree in Journalism at the University of Chester, he relocated to London in order to begin a career in the media.
In 2009, John undertook an extensive internship at national music magazine Rock Sound, where he was given the opportunity to interview bands, review the latest releases, create promotional video material, as well as assisting the graphic design team with layouts, and photographing bands for the website.
Following his time at Rock Sound, John was invited to undertake an editorial internship at national music magazine Mojo, where he was mentored by legendary Mojo editor, Phil Alexander – ex-editor of Q magazine and current executive editor of the world’s biggest selling rock magazine; Kerrang. He now writes freelance for international music website Punktastic.com and Rock Sound magazine, as well as working part time at record label Hassle Records. He is also the editor/owner of online alternative art, music and film magazine Sabotagemag.com.
Prior to moving to London, John had interned at national interior design magazine, Design Et Al, following which he freelanced for the magazine writing press and marketing material for consumption by national newspapers, as well as features on property, interior design and economics. While at university, he was tutored by ex-Big Issue editor Ato Erzan-Essien, and Guy Hodgson of The Independent. John’s first taste of the media was when he was just 16, during a placement with daily broadsheet The Yorkshire Post.
Throughout his studies at sixth form college and university, John set up successful graphic design company, J3110.com – which he still runs today. The company offers a vast range of services which include developing artist identity, creating websites, posters, album art, logos, and merchandise, as well as advanced photo editing. Past clients have included everyone from international musicians to lingerie companies.
As part of John’s university course he was trained in photojournalism, a skill which soon developed into a genuine passion, and lead him to create coffee table photography book MTL/TO/NY which documents in photos his trip from Montreal to New York via Toronto.
John’s current personal projects include shooing a music video for punk band Face of Christ later this year. He is also in the process of writing a novel.
In his spare time he enjoys photography, socialising, traveling, going to gigs, and playing saxophone – a hobby which has lead to him touring the UK and Europe with both punk bands and orchestras.
