‘Stop the War’ Protest

Yesterday (24/10/09) I was fortunate enough to attend the Stop the War protest in Trafalgar Square, London.

Throughout the afternoon, a selection of speakers took the mic on a rudimentary stage that had been set up at the foot of Nelson’s Column. The speakers had gathered from all over Europe to express their disgust at the on going occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Amongst the speakers were some familiar faces such as punk band The King Blues, and rapper Low Key. One speaker, a refugee from war-torn Afghanistan, was even broadcast through the speaker system via telephone from a Dover immigrant detention centre.

Members of rock band Enter Shikari, and Sam from Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly were present in the crowd, no doubt helping to draw a younger audience to the Stop the War cause.

The day concluded peacefully with a song from The King Blues, which aptly featured the lyric “Going to war… to prevent war… is the most stupid thing I ever heard“. Following the brief performance singer, Itch, took to the mic for some closing words in the form of a powerful spoken poem, regarding the state of politics.

Below is a gallery of photos which document the afternoon’s events:
